A red clapboard house where two dirt lanes meet wildflowers in blue and purple and gold blooming along the verge, a great elm overhead, another red building just visible to the right.

There is something deeply satisfying about a crossroads the sense of choices available, of roads not yet taken, of a world that extends in every direction from exactly where you are standing. This crossroads, with its red house and its wildflowers and its great elm, is one of the most compositionally assured drawings in the collection.

They stopped here on a warm afternoon in June. The wildflowers were at their peak. Two lanes stretched away in different directions. They chose one and drove until the road ran out.

A piece of open space and possibility one of the most joyful and expansive works in the Somewhere quieter series.
