The most tender afternoon they ever had. No particular occasion, no reason beyond the weather being perfect and the city feeling, for once, entirely unnecessary.
She wore the straw hat on the drive out and left it on the blanket when she lay down in the grass. He drew it there — the hat, the blanket, the baskets, the meadow while she watched the clouds and named their shapes. He has never been able to look at a straw hat since without feeling the particular warmth of that afternoon.
