A small blue-fronted café with a bold red awning, one table and two chairs on the pavement, a great tree for company. The most intimate of the café portrait series.
Some cafés are grand and some are small and this one is gloriously, unapologetically small. One table. Two chairs. A great plane tree leaning in from the left as if listening to the conversation.
He drew this one in fifteen minutes while she was inside. When she came out she said: that is the most perfect café in Paris. He agreed. They sat at the one table and ordered two coffees and stayed until the tree went dark.
A piece that always prompts the same question from visitors: where is that? The answer is: everywhere. It is every small café in every quiet street in every arrondissement that has ever made you feel at home.
