The story behind this piece

A quiet road leads toward a church steeple red brick buildings to the left, a great elm tree to the right, the road stretching ahead into a calm and certain distance. One of Étienne's earliest works, drawn before Paris, before everything.

Not every piece in the collection is about Paris. Not every piece is about Camille. This one is about where he came from a quiet road in the south of France, a church at the end of it, a boy with a sketchbook who had not yet learned what he was capable of.

He includes it here because it is where everything began. Before the cafés, before the Seine, before the blue bow there was this road, this tree, this steeple. The first thing he ever drew that felt true.

A quietly powerful piece understated, honest, and full of the particular beauty of a place remembered from childhood.
