Collection VI — Le nœud bleu
The chignon, blue bow
The chignon, blue bow
The story behind this piece
The story behind this piece
Dark hair swept into a perfect chignon, a cobalt blue bow at its centre, seen from behind against a warm peach background. The first portrait Étienne ever made of Camille. He did not yet know her name.
He saw her first from across the café her hair up, a blue bow at the centre, her attention entirely on the book in front of her. He was too shy to walk around and see her face. He drew what he could see instead.
That first drawing the one that started everything is this one. Dark hair, blue bow, the nape of her neck, the edge of her shoulder. He did not yet know her name. He would not know it for another forty-five minutes, when she finally looked up from her book, noticed him staring, and said: you have been drawing me, haven't you?
The most significant piece in the entire collection. The beginning of everything.
