Bare trees releasing the last of their leaves over a stone bridge, the Eiffel Tower a faint silhouette in the lilac distance. The most quietly melancholic and beautiful piece in the autumn canal series.
Late autumn in Paris has a particular quality of light cold and blue and fading, the trees almost bare, the city retreating into itself for winter. The leaves that remain are the brightest small flames of red and orange against the grey and purple of the evening.
The tower appears in the far distance, barely there, a shadow of itself. The bridge is solid and certain in the foreground. Between them, the canal reflects everything quietly.
A piece of rare atmospheric beauty the most painterly and emotionally resonant of the canal series. Works beautifully as a bedroom or living room centrepiece.
