Warm amber light spills from the café interior onto the sunlit pavement of the Rive Droite the city walks past while they sit perfectly still.
There is a particular quality of light on a Parisian pavement in the late afternoon warm from the café inside, cooler from the sky above, the two competing in a way that makes everything glow. This was one of those afternoons. The city moved around them in its usual hurry. They ordered another round and stayed.
She said she never wanted to leave Paris. He said he felt the same. That was the afternoon he knew.
