A lone figure in a blue coat walks away from us into a tunnel of red and pink trees fallen leaves on the pavement, the sky rose and lavender above, the city dissolving into colour ahead of her.
He always knew it was her from behind. The way she walked unhurried, slightly turned inward, as if she was always thinking about something interesting. He has drawn her from behind more times than from the front. It was how he first saw her. It remains his favourite view.
On this particular November evening she walked ahead of him into the boulevard and the trees closed around her in red and pink. He stopped walking and watched. She did not look back. She never needed to.
