A wide panorama of Parisian rooftops and church spires bathed in the first warm pink light of morning cherry blossom trees heavy in the foreground, the sun a white disc climbing above the city.
They talked through the night the way you only do when you are still learning someone and every answer leads to ten more questions. When the light began to change, they climbed to the hill at Montmartre and watched Paris wake up below them.
The cherry blossom was at its peak. The spires of the churches emerged from the rooftops one by one. The sun appeared slowly, white and certain, above the horizon. He picked up his sketchbook and painted as fast as he could.
