Red and orange leaves floating on the canal surface, a great dome beyond the stone bridge, a violet evening sky above. Paris at its most theatrical and most beautiful.
There is a canal in Paris where the autumn leaves fall directly into the water and float under the bridges in slow procession red, orange, and gold against the grey stone and the darkening sky. On the evening Étienne painted this, the dome of a great building was silhouetted beyond the bridge, perfectly framed.
He stood at the edge of the canal with his sketchbook and felt not for the first time that Paris was painting itself.
